Abstract
Bovine colostrum plays a critical role in calves’ development. During the first week of feeding, bioactive molecules abundant in bovine colostrum are capable to modulate proliferation and migration of immune cells. Moreover, there is very little know about early changes of heamathological values in premature and healthy calves. We therefore aimed to characterize changes of hematological values in normal and pre-mature calves during the first week of feeding with colostrum. All experiments involving animals were conducted under the guidance of animal welfare. Holstein calve newborns (n=9) were used for this study. Based on delivery time, neonate calves were assigned into two experimental groups: pre-mature birth calves (n=1) and normal birth time calves (n=8). During the study, all animals received colostrum ad libitum. At day 1 and day 7, blood was collected from jungular vein and analyzed using automatic blood analyzers. Heamathological values of WBC, LYM, MON, NEU, EOS, BAS, RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDWc, RDWs, PLT, MPV, PCT, PDWc, PDWs was evaluated and compared among study groups. Time depended changes in hematological values were observed among all study groups. Average number of red blood cells (8.06 – 15.2 1012/l), hemoglobin (92.4 – 89.4 g/l) and platelets (0.28 – 0.29 %) was increasing from day 1 to day 7. Total numbers of white blood cells were also increasing during the study period in both groups. Lymphocyte (28.2 – 42.3%), neutrophils (62.2-50.9%), monocyte (8.5 – 5.3 %) was the most predominant cell types among neonate calves delivered at normal time. Basophils (0.4 – 0.5 %) and eosinophils (0.7 – 0.9 %) were least abundant among calves (n=8) delivered at normal time. Heamathological analysis of pre-mature calves showed decreased number of white blood cells (8.43 109/l) at the day 7 in comparison to normal calves (11.72 109/l). Among this study group, lymphocytes (28.2 – 42.3 %) and neutrophils (60.4 – 50.9 %) were the
