Abstract
Introduction The increasing rate of hospital infections due to multidrug-resistant pathogens is one of the most important healthcare problems worldwide [1]. Prior version of ATS/IDSA guidelines (2005) for the management of adults with hospital-acquired, ventilatorassociated, and healthcare-associated pneumonia have emphasized the impact of the timing onset of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) on choice of empirical antibacterial treatment, because in previous studies late-onset VAP (LVAP) was found to be associated with worse outcomes [2]. Higher mortality rates of LVAP was thought to be related to multidrug-resistant rods as pathogens of VAP [3]. Recent research data have identified these rods as pathogens not only of LVAP, but also of early-onset VAP (EVAP), and have revealed that mortality rate of LVAP and EVAP did not differ [4]. Until now, little is known regarding ethiology, resistance trends of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) as pathogens of EVAP and LVAP, and patients outcomes. [...]
