Abstract
Dermal fillers are medical implants and belong to the group of medical devices. Hyaluronic acid fillers are considered safe and efficient for facial corrections. Recently, use of HA fillers has a growing trend, associated with the increased number of complications. This is related to a lack of professional knowledge of anatomy, including facial zones at risk, inaccurate patient assessment, aseptic rules, and incorrect injection techniques. There is an unmet need for unified standards in the field of dermal fillers injections area used in modern aesthetic medicine. The current situation needs to be more strictly regulated. This article is the result of the cooperation project of international interdisciplinary working group of doctors, who are experts in the field of aesthetic medicine in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The review covers the etiology of complications, knowledge of facial anatomy, aseptic rules, different injection techniques, combination with other products, the need for patient information and selection, contraindications to procedures to help prevent complications. The review provides a classification of injection complications, their prevention and treatment.
