Abstract
In recent years aromatherapy has been gaining a large significance because of the vast amount of scientific research being done about essential oils and their positive effects on health and a rising need to search for alternative solutions for changing synthetic medications with adverse side effects. There is a vast variety of scientific research papers that prove the influence of lavender, cedar, cinnamon, orange and other essential oil compositions on reducing the different types or pain origin in animals by affecting various body receptors. The aim of thesis: to identify the effect of essential oils using the method of inhalation on canine post-surgery pain and stress management. The present research has been done in X Veterinary Clinic on twenty post surgery dogs that underwent ovariohysterectomy, which have been seperated by chance in to two groups of ten dogs each for experimental and control groups. The dogs from the experimental group have been given the inhaltion of 10 % lavender essential oil and according to set time intervals physiological indicators such as heart and respiratory rate, evaluation of pain by scores and descriptions of animal behaviour were made. The results were interpreted by comparing the both groups and if the experimental group had lesser pain and stress indicators that the control group. After the results have been statistically analyzed, the effects of lavander essential oil on post-operative pain management have not been concluded, because of clinical guidelines that every dog after an ovariohysterectomy has to receive a maximum dose of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. After introducing aromatherapy to an experimental group of dogs, there were no dogs that were active or anxious while in the control group all the dogs were excited and agitated. Also, in the experimental group the heart rate and respiratory rate after the start of the therapy decreased (while in the control group it did not change). Based on these results it has been concluded that lavender essential oil in dogs reduced post-operative stress.
