History

The department was founded in 1938. In 1946 when was established the Zootechnics faculty, the department many times was reorganized. First of all separated and became an independent the department of Zoohygiene. In 1948, the department was split in two departments – Special zootechnics and Animal breeding with genetic course. In 1949, it again becomes as one – Department of Animal breeding and Special zootechnics. In 1950, the department again is was reorganised in two – Special zootechnics and Agricultural animal breeding and genetic. 12th of May, 2004, the Senate of Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (Protocol No. 05 02 08), when was reorganized the department of Informatics and Engineering at the Department was connected the Milking Training Centre (established in 1990) and the department is named the Department of Animal Sciences.

Scientific activities

Main research activities: Genetic and technological productivity raising and production quality development of livestock and poultry.

Studies

The department is equipped with modern auditoriums for the performance of study process. The study process is organized through the bases of department, research laboratories and the economic entities. There is focusing on the practical preparation of students. Practical work carried out in the Laboratory of poultry feeds and poultry products of Animal nutrition and biotechnology center, Laboratory of animal meat characteristics and meat quality assessment, Center of Josifas Tacas name milking training and a vivarium. These laboratories also serve for the preparation of students’ final works. Trips to economic entities are used to guide the system. This allows more qualified provide information on manufacturing processes. For the improvement of study quality in the department is subscribed specialty journals. Also the department allows students and teachers to use the internet in class, using video material of animal husbandry systems. Students preparing Bachelor and/or Master thesis in conjunction with the department and laboratory scientists perform experiments, investigate the quality of raw materials and animal products and analyze indicators of animal digestive process.
