Department of Animal Husbandry
In the Department of Animal Husbandry works nine staff, including eight teaching and one support personnel. In the department works two professors, four associate professors and two lecturers.
In the Animal Husbandry Technology bachelor’s studies are taught the subjects:
Required: Cattle Production; Pig Production; Poultry Production; Sheep and Goat Production; Fur Animal Farming; Beekeeping; Milking technology; Horse Production; Fishery.
Elective: Snail’s production, Forest animals and birds biology; Alternative crop and animal production; Horse Fundamentals; Small animal breeding; Development of milking mechanization.
These disciplines studied about growing farm animals for milk, meat and to get other products, feed and forage preparation technology, special animal nutrition, increasing ways and means of animal genetic potential of ensuring the quality of the production and profitability of livestock farming. Students learn to use a new animal production, storage, maintenance, breeding techniques, according to the EU's animal welfare, product quality and environmental requirements.
Faculty of Animal Husbandry Technology Master's Studies Courses: Animal Biotechnology, bee products and their production technology, pork production technology, biochemistry of meat and meat processing technology, quality of poultry products and their production technology, biochemistry of milk and technology of milk processing, milk and beef and veal production technology, management of animal farming technology, alternative bio-business, livestock business.
The students of Master programs in these disciplines studying about high-quality animal production technologies which are environmental friendly, newest achievements in biotechnology, their application in industrial conditions, the development of functional materials of animal assumptions
In the veterinary medical studies (Faculty of Veterinary) are taught subjects: Technologies of animal production, The development of mechanization of milking, Milking technology, Fur animal production.
Students studying about bovine meat and milk products, cattle farming, pig production, egg and poultry meat production, sheep and goat growing technologies, the influence of milking on milk quality and udder health status, using fodders and applied feeding technologies for the different breed of fur animals, fur and meat production technologies, cultivated fish species in Lithuania. Fish rearing in ponds. Carp breeding and cultivation techniques.
In the Veterinary Food Safety and Quality studies (Veterinary Faculty) are taught subjects: Primary production of meat of sheep and goat, Bee products, Primary production of beef and veal, Primary production of pork, Primary production of milk, Primary production of eggs and poultry, Fishery, Modern analytical techniques and their application in the food industry.
Primary production and quality assessment of egg and poultry, pork, beef, dairy, meat of sheep and goats. Bee products and production quality. Fish farming and fish resources, their protection and enhancement.
The department was founded in 1938. In 1946 when was established the Zootechnics faculty, the department many times was reorganized. First of all separated and became an independent the department of Zoohygiene. In 1948, the department was split in two departments – Special zootechnics and Animal breeding with genetic course. In 1949, it again becomes as one – Department of Animal breeding and Special zootechnics. In 1950, the department again is was reorganised in two – Special zootechnics and Agricultural animal breeding and genetic. 12th of May, 2004, the Senate of Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (Protocol No. 05 02 08), when was reorganized the department of Informatics and Engineering at the Department was connected the Milking Training Centre (established in 1990) and the department is named the Department of Animal Sciences.
Main research activities: Genetic and technological productivity raising and production quality development of livestock and poultry.
The department is equipped with modern auditoriums for the performance of study process. The study process is organized through the bases of department, research laboratories and the economic entities. There is focusing on the practical preparation of students. Practical work carried out in the Laboratory of poultry feeds and poultry products of Animal nutrition and biotechnology center, Laboratory of animal meat characteristics and meat quality assessment, Center of Josifas Tacas name milking training and a vivarium. These laboratories also serve for the preparation of students’ final works. Trips to economic entities are used to guide the system. This allows more qualified provide information on manufacturing processes. For the improvement of study quality in the department is subscribed specialty journals. Also the department allows students and teachers to use the internet in class, using video material of animal husbandry systems. Students preparing Bachelor and/or Master thesis in conjunction with the department and laboratory scientists perform experiments, investigate the quality of raw materials and animal products and analyze indicators of animal digestive process.

The department is equipped with modern auditoriums with multimedia or video facilities. The scientific laboratories are involved in student’s studying process. The practices of students take place at Josifo Taco name center of milking training, Laboratory of poultry feed and poultry products, Laboratory of animal meat characteristics and meat quality assessment, Institute of Animal Sciences of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. At scientific laboratories and centers the students are able to produce their Bachelor and/or Master thesis. During the excursions to different animal farms, the students can use modern guide system. It helps get easily information about animal production processes. The department has free access to main data basis of scientific journals of animal science.
