Prof. dr. Audrius Kučinskas, Large Animal Clinic Head Veterinarian tel. 86827256,

The Large animal hospital (LAH) is part of the Lithuanian university of Health science at Kaunas. The Large animal hospital is staffed with best veterinary specialists of Lithuania. The hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic equipment and trained technical staff, which all is the students of university. hospital`s specialists are advises private veterinarians of all the country, are trying to help to diagnose infectious and chronic diseases.

Students are introduced to start a clinical medicine in the first three years, while the fourth and fifth year is devoted entirely to clinical instruction, how to assist surgeons and other veterinarians. In sixth year’s students has a long clinical practise in the clinic. Most of clinical sciences are taught in LAH, veterinarian specialists are also lecturers.

In 2002 years were established ambulatory clinic in LAH, which daily serves a livestock farms and stables once a week. Ambulatory clinic is equipped with mobile x-ray machine, endoscope, ultrasound, blood gas analyser, the team of professionals in the LAH provides advanced medical, surgical, lameness, reproductive, and diagnostic services to horse owners and referring veterinarians. Most of clinical sciences are taught in LAH, veterinarian specialists are also lecturers. LAH is fully equipped to admit a wide range of medical cases that require 24 hour monitoring and care. hospital lab enables immediately evaluate the status of patients. This is particularly helpful for medical colics requiring IV fluid therapy, isolation diarrhea cases, neonatal treatment and much more.

The LAH is one of the busiest equine surgical units in the country. A team of experienced equine theatre nursing staff and anesthetists assists the surgeons. Round the clock large team of nursing staff provides post-operative care and house vets under the supervision of the surgeons. Many surgeries are performed under general anesthesia in our fully equipped equine operating theatre. Horses can be moved into and out of the padded anesthesia induction and recovery boxes by an overhead electronic rail system. State of the art anesthetic monitoring equipment is available to the anesthetists. Many procedures can now be performed with the horse standing under sedation and local anesthesia thereby reducing the risk of complications associated with general anesthesia and reducing the cost for the owner.

A wide range of different emergency and elective surgeries are regularly performed in LAH. Orthopedic Surgery (arthroscopy, treatment and management of musculoskeletal injuries such as wounds, septic joints and fractures), Colic Surgery (not only is the experience of the surgeons important when performing corrective surgery but intensive care nursing in the immediate post-operative period is essential to a successful outcome, there fore post-operative colic patients are nursed and monitored around the clock in our intensive care facility by our skilled and experienced nursing and veterinary staff), Dental and sinus surgery, Respiratory tract surgery.

Animals with contagious, or suspected contagious diseases, can be admitted into the isolation facilities and animals requiring critical nursing care admitted into the intensive care unit. The large on-site Laboratorymeans that rapid analysis and interpretation of blood and other samples is possible. In addition, we have state-of-the-art ultrasonography, endoscopy and other imaging equipment that plays an important role in the investigation of medicine cases. Some of the investigations available for common disorders are: Respiratory Diseases, Weight loss investigation, Investigation of liver disorders, Neurological disorders, Dermatology.

Loss of performance in a competition horse is common thing in Lithuania. These may include low grade lameness, back soreness or other musculoskeletal issues: medical problems (eg. anemia, viral infection, post-viral syndrome, gastric ulceration or respiratory disease); gynecological problems (particularly in mares); dental or biting issues or may be due to ill-fitting tack, rider or training issues, temperament problems or may be because a horse is being asked to compete at a level out with its natural ability. A combination of these issues often contributes to poor performance or a loss of performance. Horses that are referred to the hospital for investigation of poor performance are usually required to stay in for several days. At LAH the multi-discipline team approach is taken to make investigation of poor performance or loss of performance. It is important that the horse’s normal tack is brought in and where possible, that the horse’s usual rider is available at the time of initial consultation to ride the horse.

LAH veterinarians, residents and technicians are dedicated to providing your animal with the very best treatment and care.
