Last session of LSMU entrance exams in Israel before new academic year

Israeli applicants who want to study at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences were invited to take LSMU entrance exam during 30 of June – 3rd of July in Tel Aviv, Israel. In total 68 of them took part in this last session of entrance exams before academic year 2019/2020. They were selected from LSMU representatives in Israel (M. D. International Studies; ELOR - Medical Services and Rehabilitation; Overseas Medical Education) and other group - individual applicants.

LSMU International Relations and Study Center representatives Rūta Antanaitienė and Eglė Vizbaraitė organised the entrance exams, checked the knowledge and motivation of registered applicants and presented LSMU. After all, 20 offers for studies at LSMU have been issued for prospective students in the fields of: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Odontology.

Hope to see these young and motivated people at LSMU in September. Most of them already have practical experience in health field while were serving in the army and it made an influence to study hard for the exams, to keep motivation and to choose a doctor‘s profession.

Continuing tradition by visiting LSMU graduates, this time LSMU representatives had a pleasure to meet dentist Leonid Groysman, who graduated from Kaunas University of Medicine in 2010. Today L. Groysman has his private clinic and also works at ‘Free Smile’ clinic in Tel Aviv. He provides a wide range of services: from oral hygiene to prosthetic procedures.

After a long lasting artificial respiration and heart massage international students have saved a life of their study mate

On May 10-12, the traditional annual spring weekend trip to Palanga of LSMU international students was organized. This trip was organized in collaboration of the main LSMU international students’ organizations: mentors of the full time first year international students, ICOSA and LSMU ESN. Organizers were also supported by the study coordinators and psychologist of LSMU International Studies and Relations centre. 82 participants, mostly first-year and second-year LSMU full- time and Erasmus students, took part in this trip. Some of the organizers were from senior courses. The purpose of the trip was to bring together LSMU international students so that they would know each other better and could help each other when they face different challenges in Lithuania, far from their home, families and friends. Students participated in team – building activities and sport events. Participants also spent time at the seaside and on Saturday evening everybody had a dinner where all the students met and spent their time together.

Sunday morning started as usual, students were preparing for the day activities, but suddenly, at about 11 am the fifth year student’s Henoch’s heart stopped beating. He did not show any vital signs. Other students quickly called Ambulance, Samah Kamal Abbas and Sia Wejdan started making a heart massage. Second-year students Victoria Schegerer and Nick Delon also joined the resuscitation. Victoria had clinical experience since she has worked as a paramedic in Germany for several years before her studies at LSMU. She usually keeps an Ambu bag in her car, so she has asked her friend to bring it right away. Time was passing very slowly while waiting for the Ambulance. Students continued to ventilate lungs and perform heart massage for almost 15 minutes until the Ambulance arrived. When the defibrillator was connected, ventricular fibrillation was detected. Defibrillation was performed, followed by a relapse of heart activity and breathing, and after that the student was taken to the hospital. The other students helped paramedics upon their arrival and escorted their friend to the hospital.

The event in Palanga shocked not only the students who attended the event but also the entire community of the university. There were a lot of discussions among the witnesses of the event: whether everything was done properly and on time and if there would be any long-term consequences because after all, it took 15 minutes for the paramedics to arrive. It became easier when it became clear that Henoch was completely recovering. Since some of the doctors doubted the fact whether there was a total stop of the heart beating if the condition after was so good, more discussions arose. Dean of the International Relations and Study centre prof. I. Janulevičienė has organized the discussion at the Department of Emergency Medicine in Kaunas clinics, during which not only the questions of the students who participated were answered, but also their emotions were shared. Students also had the opportunity to meet a professional psychologist immediately after the event which is a common practice around the world. Stress and the challenges of saving another person’s life have a profound effect not only on the members of the society who rarely face it, but often even on the medical. Researches have shown that discussion after resuscitation not only has a positive impact on the psychological state of medical staff, but also improves the results of patients with cardiac arrest.

So what really happened that morning? The results of the Klaipėda Hospital audit confirmed that when the doctors arrived at the scene of the event, Henoch had no signs of life, and the defibrillator registered ventricular fibrillation that was successfully defibrillated. No doubt that the main life-saving actions were high quality heart massage and ventilation with a mask. High-band venticular fibrillation, registered by cardio monitor for 15 min. since the beginning of the resuscitation confirmed that students performing manual heart massage created sufficient blood circulation to protect the heart and brain from death.

What lessons do we have to learn after this event? First of all, sudden death can happen to anyone and we have to be prepared for that. Secondly, each member of our community should not only theoretically know, but also have to practice initial resuscitation: make deep and fast heart massage, effective air injections, and perform defibrillation with an automatic external defibrillator. Thirdly, every trained member of our society, whether a medical doctor or not, should join a network that has been established since this March and operates all over Lithuania. Anyone who has done trainings can download the mobile app "AED ALERT" on their mobile device and after registration he/she will get information from a dispatcher about a case of possible resuscitation in less than 750 m. away. The purpose of such network is to create a safer, empathetic and conscious community willing to help a person in distress.

img_4659.jpg (regular, 500x375)To show appreciation and gratitude of a community of LSMU Victoria, Nick, Sia and Samah have got the certificates of appreciation signed by the Rector of LSMU prof. Remigijus Žaliūnas during the meeting of LSMU senate. The students were awarded for their great awareness, prompt reaction, extraordinary service and accomplishment of a civic virtue, while saving life of a fellow student and for being an example for all other members of LSMU Community.

Henoch: I am very grateful to all my friends and peers, as well as to all doctors and nurses who have saved my life.

Victoria (II): I am very happy that the resuscitation was successful and Henoch returned to a normal life. I was sure we did everything possible in this situation, but I was worried about how such a long heart stop would affect Henoch's health. I`m proud of myself and my friends.

Nick (II): My life experience taught me to rely on the knowledge and skills which I gained during my studies. While I was doing it for the first time, I felt confident because I gained good initial resuscitation skills at the Department of Emergency Medicine in the first year. In the HLAB classes we had to deal with various resuscitation situations during the first aid course, and we had to resuscitate a mannequin many times. Good physical preparation and the skills gained during the resuscitation training course helped me to make high quality chest massage and to notice when the quality of that clicks became insufficient.

Sia (V): Good initial resuscitation skills are required not only for medical staff but also for every member of our society. However, people have more expectations for the doctors, so each student has to be particularly responsible for initial resuscitation skills from the first year. Not everyone understands this yet.

Samah (V):  Recently completed module of "Intensive and Emergency Medicine" helped a lot. This course not only updated my initial resuscitation and specialized resuscitation skills, but I also learned that in similar situations you need to act quickly, because every minute is very important.

Letters of appreciation handed in to LSMU students for participation in voluntary activities

In 2018/2019 study year the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) students were actively involved in the voluntary activities coordinated by the LSMU International Relations and Study Centre. The students performed the functions of Ambassadors, Mentors and Academic Tutors.

International students who have become the LSMU ambassadors contribute to the promotion of the University in foreign countries. During the present study year, 24 ambassadors from sixteen countries shared their opinions about the studies and life in Lithuania with those interested in the LSMU. The ambassadors answered e-mails, met the people on the Open Days and at higher education fairs. In addition, the ambassadors visited schools in foreign countries to meet pupils and inform them about the study opportunities at the LSMU. Young people and their parents were happy to hear the information not only from the University representatives, but also from the present students.

Every year International Relations and Study Centre gathers a huge team of assistants (mentors), which involves LSMU full-time students. This study year 65 mentors assisted first year full-time students, while 56 mentors assisted Erasmus + students. Notably, the mentors were selected and passed special trainings. They found time and possibilities to share their goodwill and help with others. Every full-time freshman or Erasmus + student who has just arrived for partial studies or internship has a friend mentor, who helps the new student find their way to lectures, a dormitory, shows around the city, acquantains with the transport system, advises on daily questions or studies. In cooperation with other student organisations, mentors organise first year international students’ camp and trips to Druskininkai and Palanga.

9 academic tutors were constantly ready to help international students who encountered academic difficulties in 2018/2019 study year. Senior students conducted classes for the younger before the major examinations. During those classes, they gave advice on how to study one or another subject, what literature to use as well as they answered the students’ questions.

Active students were invited by International Relations and Study Centre to the excursion to The Open-Air Museum of Lithuania, which is one of the biggest ethnographic open-air museums in Europe with the abundance of unique exhibits. The students found out about life, work and traditions of the peasants and townspeople of all Lithuanian ethnographic regions (Dzūkija (Dainava), Aukštaitija (Highlands), Suvalkija (Sudovia), Žemaitija (Samogitia) and Lithuania Minor, as they looked at the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century.

During the trip the students also discovered ancient games and played them. The LSMU representatives gave the students Letters of Appreciation for their help, effort, warm cooperation and invited them to continue the activities next study year.

A Fruitful First Day of Summer in Hamburg

The first day of summer was marked with the impressively high results of the entrance exams for LSMU in Hamburg. On June 1st the 9 candidates, who have been prepared by the „Finde Academic“, held a test of Chemistry and Biology. Later on a group of young people actively participated in a short quiz, which was organized by LSMU psychologist J. Razgulin. Applicants surprised representatives of LSMU with their great knowledge of Lithuania, Kaunas and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Afterwards J. Razgulin (LSMU psychologist) together with the International Programme Coordinator E.Vizbaraite presented LSMU studies. Another key aspect highly important for foreign students was discussed - students‘ support programmes were presented, which help them to adjust better at LSMU, which guarantee smooth integration with support from other foreign students. Students’ opportunities for Erasmus + exchange programme have also been presented.

During motivational interviews, the candidates expressed great eagerness to study at LSMU and told about their practice in German hospitals. All future students were well prepared for the interviews, knew about the peculiarities of LSMU study programmes and shared positive feedback which they received from friends, who already study in LSMU.

After the knowledge check-up and motivation interviews, 8 young people received Studies Offers at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. The Medical study program was chosen by 7 prospective students and one young lady has chosen Odontology.

Representatives of LSMU believe that this successful first summer day will lead to even greater success in the studies of admitted new students.

Young people from Ireland are looking forward to Studies at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

On May 7, 2019, two representatives of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU), Head of International Partnerships Division Gintarė Diliūnienė and International Program Coordinator Rūta Antanaitienė conducted an entrance exam session at The Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC). Thirteen young people, who are currently enrolled in the foundation program at the DIFC, had applied to study at the LSMU and were invited to sit the entrance test. Regrettably not all applicants were adequately prepared and did not have enough knowledge to pass the test successfully – only six applicants received high enough scores and, having passed an interview, were offered the opportunity to study Medicine and Odontology at the LSMU. After the examination, the University representatives and the DIFC staff had a discussion on future steps for admission procedures, as well as the signing of the study contract, the procedure of applying for a Lithuanian visa, and other practical issues.

thebest_01.jpg (regular, 383x500)

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences has been successfully cooperating with The Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC) for several years. The college has a one year study program for students from countries outside the EU which helps them to reach the education level needed for applying to major European universities. The LSMU held a presentation on their study programs taught in the English language during the Study Fair which was held by DIFC in Dublin in February, 2019. As a result, many DIFC students have since chosen to study Medicine and Odontology at the LSMU and have submitted their online applications.

Our University has a long-standing relationship of cooperation with the Lithuanian Embassy in Ireland. On May 8, Lithuanian Ambassador Egidijus Meilūnas received the LMSU representatives Rūta Antanaitienė and Gintarė Diliūnienė and discussed with them some current issues of cooperation in the fields of studies, scientific activities and clinical practice. His Excellency Egidijus Meilūnas noted that Ireland devotes much attention and funds to its health care system as well as active scientific research, especially in biosciences. For a number of years, with active participation of the Lithuanian Ministry of Health, close ties have been developing between Irish and Lithuanian health care institutions.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Lithuanian Embassy in Ireland for offering an opportunity to the local young people interested in Medical studies in Lithuania to meet with the representatives of the LMSU who held a presentation on the study program and answered all their pertinent questions. The representatives also conducted an entrance examination on the spot. We are pleased to note that applicants passed the exam showing good results and were offered openings for medical studies at the LSMU. We are also glad that two Irish Lithuanian girls will begin their studies in English at our University‘s Medical and Pharmacy Faculties in September.

The LSMU entrance exams took place in Madrid, Spain

On 12-15 April, LSMU representatives Laura Sapranavičiūtė-Zabazlajeva, Head of International Studies Division and Kęstutis Gasevičius, International programmes coordinator organized entrance examinations to University study programmes in Madrid, Spain. 6 applicants took part in the examination and 5 of them have been recruited by LSMU partner agency Donde-Estudiar Medicina (DEM).

Majority applied to the most popular medicine programme, and one girl - to veterinary medicine.  The test was used to examine the knowledge of biology and chemistry (30 questions each) and some applicants had to take English language test. As usual - it was more difficult for everyone to deal with chemistry tasks and after summing up the results and evaluating the motivational conversation, 3 exam participants were invited to study at LSMU.

Overall, all participants did pretty good job, but some lacked the right answers. Applicants who did not pass the exam were encouraged not to be disappointed, but to improve their knowledge and retake the exam on July 13 in Alicante. (for schedule changes, please, check this link: http://www.lsmuni.lt/en/study-at-lsmu/degree-studies/admission/)

Four applicants have successfully completed the exam and after a motivational interview 3 of them were offered to study Medicine, 1 applicant chose studies of Veterinary medicine at LSMU.

The LSMU representatives also met LSMU graduates Philip Perlov and Natali Babayev to discuss future cooperation with the University. Philip Perlov graduated from LSMU in 2014 and has a successful career of an anesthiologist in Beilinson Medical Center in Petah Tikva, Israel. Natali has graduated in 2018 and works as a pharmacist in a pharmacy in the city of Ashdod. She shared positive memories about the university and is very satisfied with her career.

LSMU studies presented in London

During the visit to London on 16-21 March, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) international programme coordinators Laima Dobilienė and Milda Mankelevičienė promoted studies at the study fair and organised an entrance examination.

Institutions from thirteen countries presented their study programmes in the study fair in London. The study possibilities in Lithuania were presented by eight institutions together with Education Exchanges Support Foundation. Every year more and more UK students are leaving for studies abroad. In 2018 even 34 025 students decided to study in other countries (Source: Unesco).

It is pleasing that an LSMU Medical Faculty graduate Kamal Ragupathy agreed to take part in the study fair. Currently Kamal Ragupathy is working at Forestside Medical Practice as a general practitioner registrar (ST3).

Medicine, Odontology and Nursing study programmes received the greatest interest in the study fair. The University representatives gave all the interested exhaustive information about the University, study programmes and students' leisure activities, while the graduate kindly shared his memories about the studies and life in Lithuania with the young people and their parents. During the study fair, contacts with the UK agency “Global Studies” were established. The agency consults young people interested in studies abroad.

Seven applicants took part in the examination which was organized by the LSMU in London. 5 of them successfully passed and were invited to study in the LSMU Medicine and Nursing programmes.

Splish-splash tour to Druskininkai 2019

As all the prevailing years, this year, too we had a very memorable refreshing trip called SPLISH SPLASH in collaboration with LSMU mentors programme.

As the name follows, Druskininkai is a spa town, on South of Lithuania with other main attraction such as the Aqua park and Snow arena. The trip commenced on 2nd of March and although the early reporting time of 8:30, our participants looked ever bright on our way to the first stop, the Grutas Park, where our first station for the thrilling Scavengers Hunt began.

Everyone quickly scattered to see what the park had in store for them as the organizers chased them to begin asking the question for the, ‘General Knowledge’

Station.  All the teams were very impressive and gave their best to attain the highest mark. It was joyful to see the participants give their all. Besides challenging them to the best of their knowledge, our participants learned a bit about the Lithuanian history too, as the Grutas Park hold the country's Communist-era statues.

The second station turned out to be more memorable than expected as our participants had to click a picture with their respective teams to earn the most likes on Facebook.

As the participants seemed to slowly lose energy, we headed to the Dainava Hotel to hold the last two station for the hunt.

As we allotted rooms, we quickly invited each team for a quick round of puzzles. Two teams made it to the last round, as we like to call it, ‘The Boss’ stage. The best of the best from each of the two teams had to man up to impress our beautiful coordinator Greta. Our teams sure worked hard for the price in the end.

After a long day of working hard for the scavengers hunt, everyone dispersed to finally see the famous aqua park which was steps away from the hotel we resided in. As some went for some ‘‘splish splash’’ other enjoyed the thrill of skiing in “Snow arena”.

All the organizers were appreciated for the amazing and hardworking job they did for all of us to make this trip a success.

It was all fun until suddenly everyone had to leave for back home. Even though everyone was exhausted, it was amazing to see students fill the ride back home with such energy and good memories.

Students presented LSMU in France and Finland

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) students Emma Gonzales Mourier (France) and Alina Pugatcheva (Finland) met with high school students in their own countries at the end of January. They shared their experiences about the LSMU and the study programmes. Both students study veterinary medicine and participate actively in the LSMU Ambassador Programme.

The LSMU Ambassador Programme was introduced in 2016 and seeks to involve international students into a voluntary activity aiming at promotion of the LSMU in foreign countries. The information about the ambassadors and their contacts are provided in the LSMU website as well as it is spread during the presentations of the LSMU in various countries. The LSMU Ambassador Programme involves 17 international students from 11 countries. Ambassadors consult by e-mails those who are interested in studies at the LSMU and share their experience of studies and life in Lithuania, participate in the University “Open Days” and international study fairs.

A second-year student Emma Gonzales Mourier presented the LSMU at two schools in France. She shared her impressions of the newly gained experiences, “Thanks to the LSMU Ambassador Programme, I had an opportunity to tell French high school students about the study programmes at the LSMU. While this was an invaluable personal experience for me, it was also a great opportunity for the high school students to learn more about the LSMU and to think about their career choices. This experience boosted my self-confidence and, most importantly, I realized that I could contribute to making the dreams of young and motivated people come true.”

A third-year student Alina Pugatcheva gave her presentation about the LSMU at the high school in Finland that she had graduated from. Alina was happy to share her memories about the meeting with high school community, “I prepared a detailed presentation about both the LSMU and the life in Kaunas in general because Finnish people do not know much about Lithuania. I recalled that a couple of years ago I also was a curious high school student yearning to learn more of what was going on beyond the borders of my home country. I was glad to be able to reply to the many questions of the students and tell them about the study programmes available at the LSMU. Everybody was very interested in finding out more, so I shared my knowledge with both the students and student coordinators. I was immensely happy about the opportunity to represent the LSMU in my homeland and I hope to continue doing this in the future!”

The LSMU study programmes in English and exchange opportunities were presented in Sakartvelo

2019-03-06

On 20-24 February, LSMU international programmes coordinators of International Relations and Study Centre - Žaneta Dičkutė, Kęstutis Gasevičius and foreign student psychologist Jevgenij Razgulin went to Sakartvelo, Tbilisi, where together with the Lithuanian Education Exchanges Support Foundation and other Lithuanian universities participated in the international Sakartvelo study fair. 1.jpg (regular, 500x370)
During the visit, LSMU representatives were invited to meet Ambassador in Sakartvelo of the Republic of Lithuania - Giedrius Puodžiūnas. Representatives of the embassy shared information about the country's cultural peculiarities, news of educational system and migration, also advised on the methods to be used in entering to this market, and kindly promised their assistance.

The International Study Fair was exceptional by the amount of visitors, active interest in participating institutions and we were fascinated by the young people knowledge of the English language and the purposeful search for information about the study programmes of interest. 2.jpg (zoomed, 675x900)LSMU representatives responded to visitors’ questions, introduced study programmes in English, also the state scholarships offered by the Republic of Lithuania to the residents of Sakartvelo and further employment opportunities after completing their studies in Lithuania. Young people studying at Sakartvelo Universities were interested in opportunities to study at LSMU master degree programmes or participate in exchange programmes and study at LSMU for a semester or a full academic year. The group of Sakartvelo students from Lithuanian Language and Culture Center helped Lithuanian higher education institutions and encouraged visitors to study in a friendly country.

Žaneta Dičkutė, LSMU International Programmes Coordinator, also visited three Tbilisi Higher Education Institutions - Tbilisi State Medical University, Georgian National University and The University of Georgia (in February 2019 was submitted a joint application for an Erasmus + exchange project supporting higher education mobility activities between Program Countries and Partner Countries).

3.jpg (regular, 375x500)LSMU and Sakartvelo Universities seek funding for the Erasmus + programme for mutual students exchange for studies, traineeships as well as lecturers and staff mobility activities, so visits to universities and meetings with international programmes coordinators, faculty representatives and students from partner universities have been important for the successful preparation of the Erasmus+ project  implementation and administration.

In Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) a meeting was arranged with the Head of International Relations Department Nino Kandelaki and Head of the Foreign Studies Department prof. David Topuria, who exchanged their experience of international project coordination and discussed administrative issues for the joint Erasmus+ exchange project.  TSMU is one of the oldest and largest medical science universities in Sakartvelo, with its structure and size close to LSMU: it has about 8,000 students, including 2300 international students from 61 countries worldwide. Already for 20 years, the Medical study programmes at TSMU run in three languages: Kartvelian, Russian and English, which attracts foreign citizens for a comparatively small tuition fee.  In the Erasmus+ exchange program, TSMU cooperates with a large number of universities in European countries and exchanges with LSMU are seen as an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in the implementation and application of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method in the study process. TSMU is currently undergoing structural changes in study programmes, transforming subjects into modules, and according to prof. D. Topuria, TSMU students and teachers mobility to LSMU will help to learn about different structure of study programmes and acquire new learning skills and educational competences.

The TSMU International Relations Department staff organized a University tour, introduced the Simulation Center, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Training Laboratories.  Also, the Deans of the Faculties and the members of student organizations were invited to the meeting with the LSMU International Programmes Coordinator, who presented the LSMU structure, academic, clinical and international activities, study programmes in English, and Erasmus+ project mobility results. Students were particularly interested in the possibilities of Erasmus studies and placements at LSMU, practical mobility issues, social services and financial support for students.

At Georgian National University (SEU), the LSMU representative was invited to meet with Nino Chkhikvadze, International Relations Division Coordinator, Lia Leverashvili, Medical Programme Manager, and Vice-Rector for Studies and International Cooperation Giorgi Tskhvediani. SEU is the largest private university in the country, founded in 2001, where the Medical Study Programme was launched only five years ago, but it runs only in English, with local and foreign students studying together. So far, the SEU cannot display a large number of foreign students, but Vice-Rector Tskhvediani emphasized that young and energetic academic staff, actively involved in the introduction of new innovative teaching methods and tools, help to develop a dynamic study environment and attract more students from other countries.  In September 2019, the door should be opened of newly built and equipped SEU administrative and training center, and in the future it aims to create an integrated base of study and clinical practice. Currently, the SEU Medical Center carries out primary health care, and clinical discipline students are studying in other Tbilisi hospitals with whom SEU has a cooperation agreement. 4.jpg (regular, 500x375)

The infrastructure of another private Georgian university (UG) is also rapidly expanding: the labs that still smell of paint, and the phantom practical work rooms are waiting for students returning after the autumn semester.  Established in 2004 as a US University, UG follows the values of the Western world and seeks to develop a free, creative, critical minded citizen of the world. Medical and Dentistry study programmes are only in English, with the majority of foreign students enrolled in these study programmes (1032 international students). During the visiting tour Elene Gigineishvili, head of the Odontology programme, named the advantages of UG: The Faculty of Odontology is equipped with the latest demonstration equipment and materials, training is in small groups, and during the practical work, the lecturer has no more than 5 students. One of the greatest program attractiveness indicators, E. Gigineishvili has named exchange agreements with US universities for short-term odontology studies and internships, and UG is proud to have a large number of partnerships in various regions of the world - Europe, North America, as well as Japan, Australia. According to Giorgi Imedashvili, Head of International Students and International Relations at UG, active international activities, participation in international projects, development of international study programmes is the goal and tool of the whole academic community of establishing a high UG position among the Sakartvelo universities and justifying the name of innovative university.

The sincere wish of Sakartvelo universities to cooperate with the LSMU in exchange programme and other international projects has shown that the University is recognised as a significant partner in the European region, and the Erasmus + project opens up wide opportunities for the exchange of new ideas, knowledge and experience.

Novelty in blood test: laser sensor to replace needles

Lithuanian scientists are working on a laser-based technology to establish a novel way of blood examination without a regular needle poke. The innovation is scheduled to be publicly accessible in 1 or 2 years, thus facilitating daily routines of patients with diabetes and other chronic diseases. It will enable a faster detection of acute diseases and help athletes to monitor their body condition, prevent injuries too.

Scientists of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) in collaboration with laser experts of “Brolis Semiconductors”, by using laser spectroscopy method created a sensor, which can be installed in smartphones or smartwatches. Such an easily accessible blood test will not only help to prevent people from a needle caused pain, but will decrease risks of blood-borne diseases as well.

“By using smart apps this technology will enable us to monitor certain blood changes. In case of illness we could send individual blood examination results to our family doctors or doctors from the emergency room”, says professor Žilvinas Dambrauskas, one of the technology creators from the Institute of Digestive Research of LSMU. According to professor, due to technology some blood tests would become very cheap, patients by themselves could monitor their blood changes and link them to their health, share this information with doctors and analyze it using AI programs.

“An opportunity to create better insulin pumps for patients with diabetes would be created. Athletes could use monitoring systems to predict their level of physical preparation, they would receive information about risks of injury or disease”, professor says. In case of acute diseases such a novelty is going to provide an easier diagnosis of acute infectious diseases and sepsis, also it will detect a malfunction of blood flow in different organs. Eventually the innovation would be used in medical institutions, gyms, providing emergency aid. More ways of its application would also appear.

Such a sensor of LSMU scientists and “Brolis Semiconductors” laser experts currently is the first, most developed and accurate technology. Its developers assure the technology in most cases will be as accurate as a regular, invasive blood test.

In a near future scientists plan to analyze blood samples of healthy people and compare it with the results collected noninvasively. By collecting this information the technology will be “teached” to precisely measure and predict certain changes in blood.

Currently scientists are implementing technical solutions to make the technology mobile and suitable to use in a daily environment. Big amount of information is also collected and processed in order to make the analyzer capable of precisely identifying changes in blood.

All about studies at LSMU – in Higher Education Fair in Dublin

LSMU representatives participated in annual Higher Education Fair, organized by Dublin International Foundation College (hereinafter – DIFC) on the 14th February 2019. About 30 educational institutions from United Kingdom and Ireland took part in the event, among them LSMU was the only institution outside these countries. The main goal was to provide DIFC students opportunity to communicate directly with the representatives of universities, to know better application requirements and supply more information on studies abroad.

During the Fair at LSMU stand participants were interested in entrance exam to LSMU requirements, how to prepare better for studies. They could get the newest informational brochures about university infrastructure and study programmes, LSMU souvenirs.

LSMU representatives have been given opportunity to do university presentation for DIFC students. International program coordinator Kristina Kavaliauskaitė has presented LSMU infrastructure, study programmes, student life to the participants of Higher Education Fair. International program coordinator Agnė Jašauskaitė ran the quiz about Lithuanian culture, traditions, which allowed participants get to know our country better from different perspectives.

LSMU alumni – Martin Hashemi (Sweden) and Jinho Ahn (South Korea) – both graduates of Odontology faculty, who work and reside in Dublin now – have joined our team for the event. They have shared their experience and counselled prospective students during Higher Education Fair. Prospective students have actively communicated with our alumni, asking questions about study quality at LSMU, competences of the professors, microclimate in the groups, extra-curricular activities, psychological help and career opportunities after graduation.

Collaboration between LSMU and DIFC has proved already fruitful: the increase of awareness in Ireland of LSMU English-taught Medicine, Nursing, Odontology and Pharmacy study programmes; students trust our university and its study quality. On the 7th Of May the entrance exam to LSMU for DIFC applicants will take place, we hope that this visit will benefit for prospective students’ choices in the future.

Professor Ingrida Janulevičienė and Dr. Juozas Kupčinskas visited the Rabin Medical Center Beilison Hospital and Schneider Children's Medical Center and had meetings with Hospital Managers and Deans of Tel-Aviv University, who are responsible for the clinical practises. Possibilities to do practise and take part in the clinical  activities have been discussed during the meetings – information in native language is very much useful and the quality of clinical practise done in the local medical institutions is valuable, too. During the visit in Barzilai Hospital located next to Palestine area,University representatives were suprised that Emergency Department of the hospital is located under the ground level and all urgent and planned medical services could be provided safely in case of military operations. The Wolfson Hospital had impressed by high level medical equipment and treatment service, hospital has a great occupation, so, doctors would be happy to accept 6th year students of LSMU for a clinical practise.

ESN LSMU at the 37th National Platform of ESN Lithuania

On the weekend of the 29th till 30th of September 2018, 5 delegates of ESN LSMU went on a trip to India!

Under the topic “Welcome on board to India” the Kaunas Technical University (KTU) organized the 37th national platform of the Erasmus Student Network Lithuania.

Delegations from all universities of Lithuania (with Erasmus programme), gathered in Kaunas to discuss the future of Erasmus projects, learn soft skills, elect coordinators and international delegates and, only this time, experience diversity and Indian culture.

Saturday:

During the event the LSMU delegates had the opportunity to learn about the Erasmus live in other countries, as delegates from ESN Germany and ESN Poland gave an insight to their work. Budget and action plans were discussed to build the base for a successful new academic year, in which new doors have been opened and fresh, motivated people are willing to give everything to make the Erasmus experience in Lithuania great again (#nonpolitic). A new committee, responsible for finding new partners and handling the finances, was founded. The delegates learned during presentations, how to promote events, handle IT and finances and got trained in working within the ESN Lithuania system.

In the evening the delegates from LSMU put all their energy together to perform an original Indian dance and competed against other universities. Guess who was asked to perform even twice! Later they mingled with delegates from other universities and showed their knowledge during a fantastic quiz night. All of this while enjoying Indian cuisine, getting Henna-tattoos and connecting with people from all over Lithuania.

Sunday:

The second day of the event mostly consisted of workshops, votings and great Indian food. During the workshops, the delegates were taught in PR-skills, how to improve their productivity with open source tools, met their colleges in different positions and got to know the Erasmus Network a bit more. Later they voted for a new events manager, a new national representative, and representatives of Lithuania visiting the Council of National Representatives.

What did the delegates take with them form the event?

Besides knowledge exchange about event planning and organization, the delegates learned about basic and specific structures in the Erasmus Network, new ways to find sponsors, connected with coordinators and other important people in the network and saw how fantastic a national event can be planned.

If You got interested in what happens in the Erasmus Student Network, come visit us on Facebook as “ESN LSMU Kaunas” and start your journey of self-improvement, diversity and friendship.

The Indian Summer With Incoming Erasmus+ Students and Their Mentors

On October 6th-7th about sixty people: Erasmus+ students and their mentors had opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful parts of Lithuania. Bus started its journey early in the morning from Kaunas. Heading west to the seaside, Klaipėda and Neringa.

img_5878.jpg (zoomed, 900x675)

The first day was already marked with great success because of the sunny and warm weather. When we arrived in Neringa the first place we visited was Hill of Witches. Strange, mysterious place where pagan and folklore traditions come together in woodcarvings symposia with Lithuanian myths and fairy tales. After some kisses on witch’s tongue and finding our path to hell and from it, Nida was already waiting us. Students had opportunity to try local food, especially fresh fish from Curonian Lagoon. Later a short city tour and Parnidis dune took place. It is, without a doubt the most impressive and unique place, where you can see, when the sun rises out of the water in the morning and again sinks into the water in the evening. As soon as the sun started to go down, we were already in so-called ‘Lithuanian Sahara’. A sandy paradise, where the stunning view of red sunset took our breath away, even the wind blew silently there. Indian summer was on our side.

img_5782.jpg (zoomed, 900x675)

When a day was moving to the end, we arrived in Klaipėda. Students had opportunity to relax or to continue the adventurous weekend in the city, full of entertaining places.

On Sunday morning, after amazing breakfast we started to discover Klaipėda. The city offered us a combination of ancient and modern, a little bit hipsterish, modern art places together old town atmosphere. Sightseeing tour around the city helped us understand, how historically close we are to each other. In the diverse city, where different cultures, languages even religions lived and flourished together. Students surprisingly could find connection with their own country and historical figures. The same connection we found with each other through this trip and Erasmus opportunity that enable us to see how similar we are.

img_5835.jpg (zoomed, 900x675)

After two memorable days, finally we arrived back to Kaunas, our new home. We, students, would like to thank our amazing guide Rasa, who was with us two whole days and showed us, how even a small country like Lithuania, could be so different in its nature and history.  Our gratitude also goes to coordinators, Agnė and Eglė from International Relations and Study Center, for making this trip possible and managing our big group, which was not very easy to handle.

LSMU Study Programmes Were Presented in the United Kingdom

International programme coordinator Rūta Antanaitienė and psychologist for the international students Jevgenij Razgulin from the LSMU International Relations and Study Centre visited London during 16-20 March 2017. They promoted LSMU study programmes during the Higher Education Fair, organized the entrance examination and visited the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Kingdom.

Studies at LSMU were presented at the Higher Education Fair ‘The Student World’. More than 40 educational institutions from different countries took part in the event. During the first day of the Fair, the LSMU representatives had meetings with career advisers, provided detailed information about the University and answered all their questions. Later on, career advisors are supposed to provide this information to the students of UK high schools. The LSMU representatives also attended the seminars that introduced the UK education market from a variety of viewpoints. The seminars provided more information about the expectations of prospective students and their parents and how to meet these expectations. Approximately one thousand prospective students visited the Fair and the LSMU booth was of great interest.

The entrance examination session was organized for prospective students whose applications were submitted for the academic year 2016/2017. The applicants were successful during the examination and they were invited to study Odontology at LSMU. The LSMU presentation was delivered after the examination and prospective students together with their parents were happy to get comprehensive information about the structure of University, study programmes and students’ life.

The LSMU Representatives visited the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Kingdom. Ambassador Ms. Asta Skaisgirytė and Embassy Minister Counsellor Ms. Natalija Bacevičienė gave a warm welcome to the University’s representatives. Activities of the International Relations and Study Centre, study problems of current and prospective students as well as new events at LSMU were discussed during the meeting. The Ambassador expressed her support for the international study programmes at LSMU and promised to share the information about the LSMU during her diplomatic meetings along the United Kingdom.

High number of prospective students from Israel is Expected to complement the international LSMU community

Prof. Julija Narbutaitė, vice-dean of the Faculty of Odontology; Rūta Antanaitienė and Žaneta Dičkutė, international programme coordinators; and Jevgenij Razgulin, psychologist of the international students; were visiting Tel-Aviv, Israel, during 26-29 April. During this visit, the LSMU representatives arranged two entrance examination sessions for the Israeli applicants. A total of 50 applicants sat the test of biology and chemistry and had interviews with the LSMU representatives. The first-day candidates were registered for the test by pre-med training company ‘Medical Doctor International Studies’ and the second-day examination session was arranged for the candidates registered by LSMU alumnus Dr. Philip Perlov. The prospective students showed good knowledge during the test, and 34 applicants were invited to study general medicine, 5 – odontology and 4 – veterinary medicine. Some students hardly stopped their tears of happiness when were offered a study place. The students have heard a lot of positive reviews about LSMU and wanted to join their friends and relatives who are already studying at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

Presentation about LSMU and its study programmes, international students’ support facilities, Kaunas and Lithuania was given for the audience, too. Prof. Julija Narbutaitė also presented detailed information about the odontology study programme at LSMU. The LSMU representatives answered questions about the academic and practical students’ life at the University. Some prospective students had good knowledge about our country as they have already been in Lithuania. Other candidates are planning to visit Lithuania and the University during the Open Days, which are organized by the International Relations and Study Centre.

Cooperation between LSMU and ‘Medical Doctor International Studies’ was discussed during the meeting with Dr. Moshe Cohen, the head of the company. On the last day of the visit, the LSMU representatives met the parents of students who already are studying at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and discussed the running issues.

This visit to Israel was very successful and we would like to believe that students from Israel who were offered a study place will arrive to Lithuania and will join the rapidly growing multicultural academic community of LSMU.

Authors' Workshop Held in Riga on 27 October

The workshop for PhD students in Riga Stradins University in Riga, Latvia, was held on 27 October 2017. This event was initiated and organized by Prof. Aigars Petersons from the Riga Stradins University and Prof. Edgaras Stankevičius, the editor-in-chief of the journal 'Medicina' (Kaunas, Lithuania) and the visiting professor at Riga Stradins University. They recognize the need for devoting more attention for preparing students for academic career, knowing that a significant aspect of this career includes publishing scientific papers. The goal of the workshop was to provide an insight to the environment of scientific publishing considering the perspectives of both publishers and editors, as well as to provide an overview of basic skills needed for preparing a scientific paper, with the final aim - to encourage young researcher in writing and publishing scientific papers. The programme was covered by two invited speakers: Justyna Kasprzycka and Ljuba Bacharova.

Justyna Kasprzycka leads a portfolio of scientific journals in Central and Eastern Europe at Elsevier. Her involvement in these roles has given her a detailed understanding of the Central & Eastern Europe journal portfolio and in the challenges that the researchers in this region are facing nowadays. She introduced the role and contribution of publishers, the foundation and structure of an article, the importance of using proper scientific language, and the process of reviewing a manuscript. A special attention was devoted to publication ethics, namely plagiarism as well as authors’ rights. She also presented bibliometric indicators and Elsevier products that can be used for increasing visibility of an article: ScienceDirect, Scopus, Mendeley.

Ljuba Bacharova represented the Journal of Electrocardiology and the IRIS initiative. She shared her experience as an author, as well as the executive editor of the Journal of Electrocardiology and the organizer of the IRIS initiative, where Journal of Electrocardiology plays substantial role. She touched four aspects of publishing mostly from the author´s perspective:  (1) how to prepare a good study protocol; (2) the structure and content of IMRAD papers; (3) how to communicate with the editorial office and respond to reviewers comments; (4) academic English.

She presented also the IRIS initiative, and the experience gathering during 12 years of the existence of this initiative. Discussion on a possibility to organize IRIS 2018 in Latvia or Lithuania, information of planned IRISes in Kyrgyzstan and Sweden in the year 2018, invitation to participate. Also – opening a possibility on organizing more complex and comprehensive courses on academic writing at universities, either in Lithuania or Latvia.

The main messages to take home from this workshop were: (1) knowing the environment helps to avoid potential misunderstandings or even failures; (2) the basic skills needed for successful writing are learnable. They are not always recognized and included in the university curricula or just in a limited extent. However, the attitude is changing – this workshop can serve as an example of this changing approach.

Young people from Sweden prefer to choose Medical Studies at LSMU

Closing to the end of January Rūta Antanaitienė and Rokas Anisas, international programme coordinators, visited Stockholm to represent the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences at a study fair arranged by the institutions' partner Eduplanet, and to perform entrance examinations for applicants who are supposed to join the University’s academic community in the coming September.

University’s representatives have received a high interest from prospective students and their parents during the Study Fair. Most of the interested people have already known about LSMU, and wanted to get more information face to face. Therefore, LSMU booth was crowded all the time and intensive conversations were going non-stop. Moreover, a recent Swedish graduate Gaziza Shamsi and a current student Omar Mustaf had joined the LSMU booth to answer all questions of the curious prospective students.

On Sunday morning LSMU’s team had a planned entrance examination held for a class of 30 MD International pre-med students. The examinees had shown good results, with some reaching record breaking scores of up to 90%. Sounds of joy were reverberating in the corridor after the exam results were announced and offers to study at LSMU were given out. "I can’t wait to come to Kaunas and start my course!" some students said.

The very next day, another entrance examination has been held in the meeting room of Clarion Hotel. This time for a group of 10 people recruited by the University’s partner Eduplanet. Test results were not so good as in the previous examination and only two examinees were given an offer to start studies in September. Three applicants have been exempted from the entrance test because they had BSc degree diplomas in biosciences. After the precise check of education certificates and interview, they all were offered to continue an academic journey in medical sciences at LSMU.

Rūta and Rokas were satisfied with the outcomes of Stockholm’s visit. All the young, passionate and smart people were given the opportunities to study at LSMU and join our international community of medical academics that made the trip fruitful for the institution and the young individuals alike.

More Swedes to come for degree studies to LSMU

More than five hundred of prospective students visited study fair “Brunch @ Studin” in Gothenburg where 30 educational institutions from different countries (mostly UK, USA) were presenting their study programs. LSMU was the only institution among them offering studies in different fields of medicine and veterinary sciences. Many of attenders were particularly interested to study at LSMU, mostly choosing programs in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine fields. LSMU table was of great interest.

One alumni, doctor Saman Rezaei who graduated LSMU in 2015 and currently is working as dentist at public clinic in Gothenburg joined university team and greatly contributed with live experience from his studies and student life in Lithuania. Vice Dean of International Relation and Study Center Alvidas Šarlauskas and two international programme coordinators Simona Černiauskienė and Milda Mankelevičienė had a number of interviews with prospective students, their friends and sometimes even family members. Most of Swedes considers Lithuania as a good destination for degree studies and values LSMU because of well-organized studies and rich experience in education of international students.

During the stay in Gothenburg the first entrance examination was organized as well. All prospective Swedish students applied for the Medicine study programme and a few of them were invited to study at the LSMU. The presentation about LSMU and its study programmes, international students’ support facilities was given for the audience after an entrance examination. The LSMU representatives answered questions about the academic and practical students’ life at the University. All candidates were really motivated and they are planning to visit the University during the Open Days, which are organized by the International Relations and Study Centre.

Gifted students from Ireland for the jubilee of the state

In the middle of February, the representatives of the International Relations and Study Center (TRSC) of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) - psychologist Jevgenij Razgulin and International Programme coordinator Agnė Jašauskaitė - visited Ireland, Dublin, where they attended the Higher Education Studies Fair organized by the DIFC Dublin International Foundation College and held an entrance exam to the LSMU, which was taken by 43 young people.

DIFC College Business Development Representative Tiago Barcelini Canhoto visited the LSMU in December 2017 and got acquainted with the University's base for science, infrastructure and studies. The representative also visited the LSMU hospital “Kaunas Clinics”, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the LSMU Medical Simulation Center and the library. During the visit, the opportunities and strategies of attracting new full time students to Nursing, Pharmacy, and Dentistry programs were discussed.

Our first visit to DIFC was very successful. At the Higher Education Studies Fair the psychologist Jevgenij Razgulin gave a presentation and introduced everyone with studies and opportunities at LSMU, academic life and leisure at the University. The University's representatives also organized a quiz for future students about Lithuanian culture and history. After the announcement, the LSMU desk was visited by a group of young people who were familiar with the LSMU, had found information on the LSMU website, and only wanted to get more information about the things which concerned them.

On February 16, when Lithuania celebrated the centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania, the representatives of LSMU organized an entrance exam. Out of the 43 applicants who applied for the entrance examination 37 received invitation to study at the LSMU. Such results indicate that future students who are attending preparatory courses are strongly and well prepared for the future studies. Despite the fact that some of the applicants had not completed the training course yet, they were able to get the excellent grades. During the motivational interviews, 26 young people were offered to study Medicine, 6 - Nursing, 3 - Dentistry and 2 - Pharmacy. We are glad, that there were students who chose to study Nursing, Pharmacy and Dentistry. For the young people who passed the entrance examination and have chosen these study programs, LSMU was the first choice among the possible universities.

The recent collaboration between the LSMU and the DIFC Dublin International Foundation College has already given remarkable results: promotion of such LSMU degree programs as Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry in Ireland and also it helped to increase student’s confidence in our University as an institution of high quality of education.

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Offers Attractive Studies for Ukrainian Citizens

This year on 19 – 21st April, two large higher education exhibitions “Education and Career – 2018” and “Education Abroad” were held in Kiev (Ukraine), where the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) study and postgraduate fellowship programmes for foreigners were presented. Visitors of the LSMU stand were familiarised with the study and postgraduate fellowship possibilities at the LSMU as well as with the Lithuanian support for the Ukrainian citizens studying in Lithuania. The University was represented by the international programme coordinator Laima Dobilienė and the Vice-Dean Alvidas Šarlauskas.

fotopriestraipsnio.jpg (zoomed, 900x624)
More than 7000 visitors attended the exhibition during three days. At the LSMU stand, high school students and their family members were mostly interested in Medicine, Odontology and Veterinary Medicine study programmes. Master study programmes received less attention – there were few visitors in the exhibition looking for them. During the exhibition, the LSMU representatives met with student recruitment agencies in the Ukraine and discussed cooperation possibilities. Besides, relations with Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine from Timisoara were started. The latter university also seeks cooperation in Erasmus + programme. Collaboration opportunities were discussed with the institution which organises trainings for the Ukrainian university teachers of medicine, pharmacy and public health in foreign countries.
Studies abroad are very popular among the Ukrainian young people. The number of Ukrainian citizens going to study abroad increased from 21 thousand to 59 during the last six years. According to the statistics of the exhibition organizers, the most popular countries for studies are Poland, Germany and Russia. Study possibilities in Lithuanian universities are little known to the Ukrainian youth. Many visitors of the LSMU stand were surprised by the opportunity to study in English, which they appraise seeing the added value to the mobility of labour force.
The results of the University representation at the educational exhibition after more than five years break show considerable changes in Ukrainian higher education market over this period. The choice of studies abroad increased more than twice. There has also been improvement in the funding opportunities of the studies. A clear potential is seen in this market in offering studies in English and orienting them towards the Ukrainian youth who looks for bigger labour force opportunities.

Entrance examination in Tel-Aviv

Rūta Antanaitienė and Aušra Surantienė, International Programme Coordinators had visited Tel-Aviv, Israel, during April 22-25. LSMU’s representatives arranged two entrance examination sessions for the Israeli applicants. A total of 50 applicants sat the test of Biology and Chemistry and had interviews with the LSMU’s representatives. The first-day applicants were registered for the test by pre-med training company ‘Medical Doctor International Studies’ and the second-day examination session was arranged for the applicants registered by another pre-med training company ‘Overseas Medical Education’ Dr. Shahar Geva and LSMU alumnus Dr. Philip Perlov. All prospective students had good knowledge and 40 applicants were invited to study Medicine, 2 – Odontology and 1 – Veterinary Medicine. Some students hardly stopped their tears of happiness when were offered a study place at LSMU. Students have heard a lot of positive reviews about LSMU and wanted to join their friends and relatives who are already studying at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

israel.jpg (zoomed, 900x413)

Presentation about LSMU and its study programmes, international students’ support facilities, Kaunas and Lithuania was given for the audience, too. The LSMU’s representatives answered questions about the academic and practical students’ life at the University. Some prospective students had good knowledge about our country as they have been already in Lithuania. Other applicants are planning to visit Lithuania and the University during the Open Days, which are organized by the International Relations and Study Centre.

ESN LSMU represented at the Annual General Meeting Costa Brava 2018

The Annual General Meeting of the Erasmus Student Network is the largest European student conference focusing on the theme of mobility. In the year 2018 Spain hosted AGM Costa Brava from 15th till 18th March, with 1000 students representing more than 500 Higher Education Institutions from 40 countries to elect a new International Board, debate the future of the network and the broader role of internationally oriented youth in Europe.

1.jpg (thumb, 100x67) 2.jpg (thumb, 100x56) 3.jpg (thumb, 100x67) 4.jpg (thumb, 100x67)

ESN LSMU was represented by Abhiyaan Malhotra (President of ESN LSMU) and Simona Adomaviciute (Education Officer of ESN Lithuania) at this conference discussing the future of Europe and the future of our network.

The conference started with the traditional Flag Parade highlighting the diversity and various colours and voices of the countries that are part of ESN. The flag parade concluded with an opening ceremony where we were addressed by dignitaries such as the Mayor of the city and the representative of University of Girona along with partners of ESN such as RyanAir, Hostelling International, Dr. Walter and many more.

The next day we started with plenaries and discussions on the work done in the last year by the board members of ESN International who are elected volunteers and are passionate about making a change to the international student experience. We also witnessed the candidates that aspire to be these elected full time volunteers and help erasmus students by getting policies in place for their integration into host universities.

There were plenty discussions about the possible new logo and the possible structural change within ESN to make our network stronger than it is now and long lasting. Fruitful workshops were held that discussed various topics ranging from things that matter to us on a day to day basis and how things can be made better for Erasmus students at the local level though the local sections such as ESN LSMU to  things that mattered and were of interest to ESNers that want to get involved with Erasmus Key Actions, European Voluntary Service project and those that want to apply for internship at the European Commission.

We had the opportunity to get to know 500+ institutions that were represented and different partners present at the infomarket, where ESN LSMU presented their university LSMU and the courses LSMU currently runs, along with various other universities of Lithuania.

The social programme also promoted mobility and cultural experience. We got the true taste of Europe through the International Dinner that presented the national dishes of 40 different countries. Followed by the Spanish Night the next day when we were given the experience of a typical night in Spain while being busy with engaging discussions about our network. We ended the conference with the Gala Dinner that was accompanied by the STARawards, in which ESN LSMU received 2nd Place throughout the network in the logoSTAR category for the logo and the integration of the logo with the faculties at the university and it is a true representation of the courses at the university.

2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage - an opportunity to celebrate, share,
embrace, and shape culture. Through our daily events and activities organised on the local, national and international levels, we, the dedicated volunteers, are shaping the cultural heritage we will leave for our children. We are the ones to step into the roles of global leaders. We have to fully realise the power of our potential.

AGM is one of the events that motivates students to keep on doing what they are doing for Erasmus and International students and encourages a dialogue on change and shows them how other students just like them are involved across Europe.

"AGM has come to an end but definitely not the motivation for us to keep going forward."
- João Pinto, President ESN AISBL

In conclusion this event was engaging and had a lot of fruitful discussions in addition to a vote on the action plan of the next year, the logo, the structure of the organisation and the new international board. This shows our true international nature representing ESN LSMU, representing Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and ESN Lithuania and Erasmus Students in general and being a part of the Erasmus Generation.

Palanga trip

‘This trip was truly one of the most enjoyable trips I have been on. My entire weekend was filled with nothing but fun and I would repeat it all again!’ – Hytham Dafalla. This was one of the many comments that were given about the recent Palanga trip.

This year, the mentoring program collaborated with ESN LSMU to organize a trip to Palanga for all the international students, the mentors of the Erasmus students and international students, and the Erasmus students of LSMU.  Although it was the first, it was certainly successful, bringing 106 participants all together.

The trip started on Friday, the 4th may, where the participants were taken by two buses to Palanga. A trip which lasted approx. three hours but felt as if it was three minutes due to the extreme excitement of the participants. The first of many organized activities started on the bus as we were travelling, which included fun filled games, such as “Guess the song”, “brain war” quiz and of course who can turn down a game of “Bingo”. These activities filled the atmosphere with friendly competition and light hearted pleasure for all. The prizes given to the winners filled them with joy and excitement for the next games.

Once we reached KTU rest house “Politechnika”, all the participants were without a question ready to explore the city and run to the beach, but first we had to be registered into our allocated rooms. The comfort of the rooms filled us all with a feeling of relaxation and peacefulness. But it wasn’t long before all the participants were up and ready to tour the city. The participants were given activity free time for the remainder of Friday in order to allow them to unwind from the long journey and be ready for what Saturday would hold for them.

The next day, after breakfast, all the participants were ready to explore what the day had in store for them. It all started with one of the most anticipated activity, the scavenger’s hunt. Most of the participants made it their top priority to move through the stations of the hunt and be the best team there is. The Team work put in by each of the teams made the scavenger’s hunt all the more fun to watch. This activity, unquestionably, brought out the creative side of the students. In order to carry on this activity, the participants were split into groups. Each group had to go through all the five stations and in each station a different task was given, whether it was singing or solving a puzzle. It most certainly challenged their imagination as they had to put all the pieces together at the last station to finish the story of the scavenger’s hunt. The winner was selected by the participants based on the team which had the best acting and imagination skills at the last station. The effort of all the teams in making the winning video was not only amusing but it was also filled with imagination. To the participants, the scavenger’s hunt was the most testing yet joyful activity in the trip.

After the scavenger’s hunt, all the participants were filled with energy to do more and to continue their journey of exploring the wonders of Palanga. Once more, the participants were taken by the buses to the spectacular HBH where they were able to get lunch, take a look at the most adorable pets and to some who wanted the extra adrenalin rush- visit the spine tingling Adventure Park.

In the evening, back near the beach, the most anticipated activity, beach volleyball, was played. The participants proved their resilience and their outstanding volleyball skills as they showed their passion and enthusiasm into making their team be the champion of the game.

As sun started to set on Saturday evening, it came time for the activities to come to an end. The winners of the activities were announced along with a closing ceremony to appreciate the time spent with the students. The participants stood from their seats to cheer and clap as the mentors and the organizers of the trip were called up to receive a certificate of appreciation which was signed by the dean of LSMU to show gratitude for all their work. And of course the cherry on top, ice cream was given to all the participants of the trip and regardless of the chilly evening, no one can say no to ice cream.

On Sunday, the 6th of May, as much as we all wanted to stay in the peaceful and calming seaside of Lithuania, it was time for us to return back to Kaunas. It was pleasing to see that even though the trip exhausted the energy of the participants, they still had the vibrant spirit to keep the bus journey back home filled with positive and memorable vibe.

Freshers’ Camp 2018

This year’s Freshers’ Camp was all about meeting people, having fun together and making friends. Studying abroad is an adventure we want to experience together – and this weekend trip gave our Freshers the perfect opportunity for a good start into a whole new life!
As every year, Guosta gave us a warm and sunny welcome with a slight refreshing breeze in the air. After arriving, registering, finding their teams and exploring the campsite, everybody had the chance to get to know each other by playing some extraordinary games made up exclusively for them by our creative organizers. Our Freshers – and the organizers – were amused to find themselves in the middle of a vicious paint battle, a race against time or a human pyramid. Drenched in our most famous weapon, the tomato juice, the teams fought until the very end to become the winner of the first event.
To recover from this energy consuming activity, we had dinner in the beautiful outside food area of our campsite in Guosta. After another little break, we started our much beloved Guosta Quiz Night, the ultimate battle of brains. The teams had to answer five rounds of tricky questions – as well about medical subjects as about commonly known topics. Everyone wanted to prove their knowledge and it became loud and cheerful inside the assembly hall. Even hours after those brainwars, the students – old as new – were still discussing the questions and answers of this challenge.
Some of us decided to have a bonfire in the yard between the cottages. Until late at night we played guitar and sang our favourite songs by the fireplace. Others were rather in a dancing mood and Guosta was filled with music and laughter until the early morning hours when it was time to get some sleep.
But of course, you cannot make friends when you sleep. This is why our Freshers got up before breakfast the next morning for some wake-up-dance-moves outside. The Indian members of our organizing team showed everyone how to have a great time – even if it is early in the morning, you are not a morning person and maybe not the best dancer. We all ended up moving and laughing and enjoying ourselves. The best way to start your day!
After breakfast, our Freshers were sent on a mission to find pieces of information in our annual Scavenger Hunt. Since we just had eaten and some of us had a little lack of sleep, we decided to take it easy and not rush the hunt. With brains and precision, our Freshers found every location that contained a hint, took pictures for later analysis and fiercely protected their team mascots. In the end, we had a lot of photos, many new team memories and a Lion King!
At lunchtime, everyone gathered in the food area of the camp. With a beautiful view of the sun reflecting from the lake downhill, we enjoyed our well deserved meal and Guosta at its best.
The afternoon was about relaxing and doing what you want to do. Not without some action though! Those who wanted and felt fresh enough, could participate in team sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer. The Freshers as well as the organizers showed their wild side and competed for the win until it was almost dinner time, while others were sitting by the lake, swimming or catching up on some sleep.
The second night in camp began – and that also meant the craziest games! Can you push an orange with a banana tied to your pants? Or eat a cookie that was placed on your head without using your hands? Our Freshers sure can! And they showed us what determination looks like. Just what you need to win the game and have a good party with your best friends afterwards! And this is just what we did. For those who wanted to have a short break or listen to the sounds of the guitar, the fire was lit again and uncountable rounds of Werewolf were played in the glimmer of the flames.
For us, this was the last night in Guosta for 2018. But we will be back soon and do it all over again! Making friends in a foreign country can be like finding a second home and having another family. For us, studying here means spending time together and helping each other. Freshers’ Camp was the perfect chance for our new students to start with that right now!
